SEXUAL ASSAULT OF CHILDREN

  • Convicted rape and sexual assault offenders serving time in state prisons report that two-thirds of their victims were under the age of 18.
  • One of every seven victims of sexual assault reported to law enforcement agencies were under age six.
  • Among rape victims less than 12 years of age, 90% of the children knew the offender, according to police-recorded incident data.
  • Frequently, the person who sexually molests a child is also a child.
  • 40% of the offenders who sexually assaulted children under age 6 were juveniles (under the age of 18).

Instructor
Detective Bob Sheehan(ret) was a member of the Tampa Police Department for 24 years. Detective Sheehan worked in the departments Sex Crimes Family Violence Unit and was a member of the FBI's Innocent Images Task Force that focuses on Child Exploitation on the Internet. Bob has conducted training for the FBI, U.S. Attorney's Office, Scotland Yard, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and many others. The Federal Court in the Middle District of Florida recognizes Bob as an expert witness in child exploitation and computer investigations. Detective Sheehan has a Master of Business Administration from Saint Leo University and expects to complete his Doctorate Degree in 2005. He is an adjunct Professor for Saint Leo University and the University of Tampa.
